Water
Filter

- Description -

This project looked into the water poverty found in areas of Mali. Features such as the rounded base and red slip decal were incorporated to imbed Mali culture and tradition into the ceramics. The vessel was made so that the water collection point was guarded from contaminated water. This included a lid and ladle for the user to naturally avoid contact with the clean water and surfaces. A splash guard was wrapped around the water filter to separate the two openings and the filter sits on a holder so that a new filter can be implemented or left out for drying without contamination. The idea of this project is to be self-sufficient, cutting expenses and the need for imported goods. The filter itself is a clay powder and sawdust mix while the vessel itself can be made using traditional Malian techniques and a couple of templates that can be continually reused or adapted upon by the villages themselves. This can then be used by households to provide clean and safe drinking water in a sustainable way, even in the most remote of areas.
